πŸŒͺ️ Storm Chaser's Field Guide β€” reading the composites & SPC colors together

This guide teaches one skill: walking onto the Models page, reading the severe-parameter walls β€” SCP, STP, EHI (and SHIP for hail) β€” and knowing instantly what the colors are telling you, because every wall, the Severe page outlooks and the Mesoanalysis composites all speak the same six-color SPC language.

Live right now (2026Z HRRR): Jellico SCP 1.3 β€” the Models page ranks every East TN town hourly.

🎨 The SPC color language β€” one ladder, everywhere

SPC's categorical outlook colors double as the fill ramp on the severe walls. Memorize the ladder once and every map on this site reads the same way β€” a yellow blob means slight-risk-grade environment whether it's an outlook polygon, an SCP wall, or a mesoanalysis composite:

TSTM β€” unorganized β€” storms, if any, stay ordinary
MRGL β€” marginal β€” isolated severe possible
SLGT β€” slight β€” scattered severe storms
ENH β€” enhanced β€” numerous severe storms
MDT β€” moderate β€” widespread severe likely
HIGH β€” rare β€” long-track strong tornado / MCS outbreak

On the walls the ramp is continuous (values blend between bands); the hex values above are the exact anchors shared with the Severe page and the mesoanalysis composites. A wall that is entirely green is simply saying "no organized-severe environment yet" β€” that is information, not a bug.

πŸŒͺ️ SCP β€” Supercell Composite: can a rotating storm organize here?

Formulamin(MUCAPE/1000, 1.5) Γ— min(ESRH/50, 1.5) Γ— min(EBWD/20, 1.5)

SCP multiplies the three supercell ingredients β€” instability, storm-relative helicity (spin), and deep-layer shear β€” so all three must be present for the value to climb. A wall goes yellow-orange only where fuel and spin overlap.

SCP < 1ordinary cells at best β€” chase for lightning photos, not structure
SCP 1–4marginal supercells possible β€” watch storm mode closely
SCP β‰₯ 4significant supercells likely β€” the classic target area

Read it on the Supercell Composite wall. The strongest axis is where you stage before storms fire; the cap at 1.5 per term keeps one extreme ingredient (huge CAPE, dead air) from faking a signal.

🎯 STP β€” Significant Tornado Parameter: which end is tornadic?

FormulaSCP's terms at tornado weights Γ— LCL term β€” low cloud bases raise it

STP is SCP with tornado tuning: it weighs helicity and shear harder and adds a cloud-base term β€” low LCLs (humid surface air, small T/Td spread) are the tornadic ingredient. Where SCP says "supercells", STP says which part of that area supports tornadoes.

STP β‰₯ 1tornado-favorable β€” tornado is a credible scenario in that corridor
STP β‰₯ 2significant-tornado environments β€” strong, long-track tornadoes possible

Read it on the Significant Tornado Parameter wall, animated hour by hour. In the field: when a QLCS or supercell cluster moves along an STP axis, the embedded rotation threat is highest where the axis and the storm path intersect.

⚑ EHI β€” Energy Helicity Index: the early spin-and-fuel check

FormulaMUCAPE Γ— ESRH / 160,000

EHI is deliberately simple β€” just instability Γ— spin. It ignores shear direction and cloud bases, which makes it fast and honest: when EHI climbs toward 1 while the shearing is still organizing, supercells are becoming possible even before SCP agrees. It is often the first of the three to light up as a warm front or dryline sets up.

EHI β‰₯ 1supercell-favorable β€” cross-check SCP and STP for the full picture

Read it on the EHI wall. Hail hunters: pair it with the SHIP wall β€” SHIP β‰₯ 1 marks significant-hail environments the same way.

🧊 SHIP β€” Significant Hail Parameter: how big might the stones get?

Formulamin(MUCAPE/1000, 1.5) Γ— min(LR75/5.6, 1.5) Γ— min(mid-RH/50, 1.5) Γ— min(EBWD/50, 1.5)

SHIP stacks the four hail ingredients β€” instability, steep 700–500 mb lapse rates (the growth-zone chill), mid-level moisture, and deep-layer shear (which keeps stones recycling through the growth zone instead of falling out). Like the other composites, each term caps at 1.5 so one extreme can't fake the signal. SHIP says nothing about tornadoes β€” a SHIP 4 day can carry zero torsional spin.

SHIP β‰₯ 1significant-hail environment β€” severe hail is a credible scenario, quarter-to-golfball sized
SHIP β‰₯ 2very large hail likely β€” tennis-ball-plus stones; car position and shelter planning stop being optional

Pair it with the 700–500 mb lapse-rate wall (steepness of the growth zone) and the 600 mb temperature wall (the melt layer β€” cold 600 mb air lets stones survive the fall). Both live on the same collage.

πŸ“Έ Hail structure β€” and when to trade the tornado target for the hail core

Reading hail structure: on radar, big hail announces itself β€” reflectivity cores above 60 dBZ aloft, a three-body scatter spike (the flaring 'hail spike' downstream of the core), and an unusually deep, tight core pedestal. Visually: greenish-white glow inside the vault, mamma under the anvil, and stones that look like splattered rubber. High-based storms (elevated updraft bases) drop bigger stones at the ground β€” more fall distance to accelerate and less warm air to melt them.

When to trade the tornado target: tornado priority holds whenever STP β‰₯ 1 shows anywhere in range or a tornado watch is up β€” rotation beats photography, every time. Trade to the hail core when the walls split: SHIP β‰₯ 2 with STP < 0.5 and a fat cap (huge fuel, no spin), high-based storms, or the SCP axis keeps dying while LR75 stays steep. The tell is in the pair, not one map β€” the SHIP wall next to the STP wall at the same hour makes the call obvious.

Hail intercept is a different geometrynever wait under the core β€” position on the storm's inflank, shoot wide, and keep the car pointed out with glass away from the wind. Hail kills chasers' windshields far more often than tornadoes kill chasers.
The honest hybridwhen SHIP and STP overlap in space, ride the storm's rear flank where you can frame the structure and stay clear of both cores β€” the overlap corridor is where the day pays twice.

Hail photography prizes the same discipline as tornado work: a planned exit, distance, and letting the storm come to your camera. The field card's safety rules all still apply.

🧭 The chase-day drill β€” one workflow, five maps

1. Frame the day. Open the Severe page β€” the SPC outlook colors set expectations. ENH+ anywhere in your range means today is a driving day.

2. Check the ingredients. On the collage, load MUCAPE and 0–6 km shear at the same hour: fuel β‰₯ ~2000 J/kg under β‰₯ ~30 kt shear is the raw supercell pairing.

3. Find the organization zone. Switch to SCP β€” the yellow-orange axis is your staging area. Play the wall loop to see when it matures.

4. Find the tornado end. Switch to STP β€” where it crosses 1 inside the SCP axis is your tornado corridor. Advance the hours: corridors migrate with the low-level jet.

5. Verify live. Watch the radar and the mesoanalysis as storms fire β€” the meso composites show what the storm is actually ingesting. The Models page town-ranking card tells you which communities sit in the parameter air.

When the models disagreedifferent models painting SCP differently = timing/setup uncertainty. The wall's outlier badge flags the odd one out; lean toward the majority and hold a bigger safety margin.

🧠 Field quiz β€” read the walls, 8 of 10 to pass

Ten map-reading scenarios straight off the severe walls. The colored chips use the SPC fills from the ladder above β€” judge each answer like you would on a chase day. 8 of 10 (80%) passes. Grading marks green-correct / red-picked, explains the why behind each answer, and your best score is saved on this device.

1. SCP 1.6An SCP wall shows a broad 1.2-2.0 orange corridor ahead of the dryline. What is that corridor telling you?
2. STP 2.3A narrow STP maximum of 2-3 sits on the north edge of the SCP axis. What do you do with it?
3. EHI 1.1EHI crosses 1.0 two hours before SCP or STP show anything meaningful. What is this?
4. An SCP wall shows deep green almost everywhere, a yellow batch, and one orange blob. What is the orange blob?
5. SHIP 2.2A SHIP wall paints 2.0-2.5 over your county while STP stays at 0.3. What kind of day is this?
6. SCP reads 2.5 on the wall, but a capping inversion holds all day and nothing fires. What happened?
7. After dark, STP climbs to 2.5 along a squall line's leading edge. What does the field guide say?
8. One model's SCP shows 4+ where three other models show 0.5-1.0. How do you handle the outlier?
9. The whole wall is deep green with values under 0.5 everywhere. What does an all-green wall mean?
10. You chase to the SCP 3 axis and storms are struggling β€” radar shows junky, disorganized cells. Now what?

⚠️ Safety β€” the part that actually matters

The forecast gets you close. The radar, an escape route, and discipline keep you alive. Never core-punch a hook or hail core β€” approach from the south/southeast, keep an escape route planned, and know the road network before convection fires.
Chase with an out.Always know where you would drive if the storm turns. Night chasing halves your options β€” treat nocturnal STP axes with extra respect.
Warnings win.Model walls are guidance, not guarantees β€” when the NWS issues a warning for your location, act on it first and argue with the models later.

This guide is educational. It is not official forecasting guidance β€” the Severe page's NWS/SPC products and local warnings are the authoritative source.
