🌊 Sea-surface temperature - the hurricane fuel map

NASA JPL's Multi-scale Ultra-high Resolution analysis (GHRSST L4 MUR), streamed client-side from NASA's keyless GIBS tile service - the same sea-surface-temperature field hurricane forecasters watch. Storms need ~26°C (79°F) water to sustain themselves: watch the orange/red pool in the Gulf Stream, the Gulf and the Main Development Region, and whether the week-ago comparison shows a cool wake (upwelling + evaporative cooling) where a storm mixed the ocean. Buoy markers report measured water temperature - click one for the reading. The dotted line is the Gulf Stream axis - the warm western-boundary current storms ride north - located from GOFS 3.1 surface currents (speed-maximum walk across the corridor, valid 2026-10-02 20:00) and colored by current speed, green through red as the jet strengthens to 2 m/s; hover any stretch for its speed. Toggle it off for the plain SST field.

Live NDBC buoy observations (hourly reports): marker color = significant wave height, arrow = mean wave direction, tooltip = height/period/direction/water temp. The dashed rings highlight just the surf-relevant 10 s+ swells (indigo 10-13 s, violet 13 s+ groundswell) - organized energy that wraps into beach breaks, unlike wind chop which closes out fast; 13 s+ is the early head-up that a hurricane swell train is arriving before the storm does (swell outruns its storm, period outruns the swell). The long swells that reach Tennessee's mountains start here - and the swells that outrun a storm into the Southeast coast are the first signal of a hurricane offshore. Values marked - were not reported (NDBC's MM sentinel is never guessed). Rip-current one-liners are qualitative guidance derived from the nearest buoy's wave height and period (bigger surf and long-period swell drive stronger rip currents) - they are not a substitute for the beach warning flags or your local NWS forecast: check the flags and talk to a lifeguard before swimming.
